The Klean Group of Companies

The Klean Group of Companies

Klean Graphene is part of the Klean Industries group, which recovers energy and resources from waste streams across multiple sectors.

Klean Graphene does not operate in isolation. It is one expression of a single engineering discipline that runs through the whole Klean group: take a waste stream, apply controlled thermal conversion, and recover something with more value than the material that went in. Nanocarbons are the most technically demanding end of that spectrum, but they draw on exactly the same reactor, gas-handling and materials know-how as the rest of the portfolio.

One shared process backbone

Carbonisation, thermal conversion, gas cleaning, heat integration and solids handling recur across every Klean sector. Lessons earned in one application travel directly into the next, which is why the nanocarbon platform could be scaled rather than reinvented. The carbonisation step behind Klean’s graphene-like structures, carbon nanotubes and fullerenes was developed in collaboration with Mitsubishi Corporation from the late 1980s through the 1990s, and that work now sits inside the group’s wider technology base.

Proven at scale

The joint pilot in Japan began at 0.4 tonnes per annum in 2000 and was scaled to process approximately 2,500,000 used tires — around 20,000 tonnes of rubber annually — with full-scale output of roughly 7,000 tonnes per annum of nano-recovered carbon black and 700 tonnes per annum of carbon nanotubes. Moving a nanomaterial from pilot to plant is where most ventures stop. Group-level engineering capability is the reason this one did not.

Material supply and project delivery

Because the group designs and engineers facilities as well as producing material, customers can enter at whichever point suits them: buy qualified nanocarbon grades, commission a feasibility study on a waste-to-nanocarbon project, or contract a turn-key facility. The companies listed below cover the group’s wider activity.

Where a group company is best placed to answer your question, we will say so directly. Scope, references and commercial terms are discussed once the requirement is clear.
